It seems the claws of COVID-19 spared no industry existing. It would obviously be appalling to see this not being so.
One of these, the Zambian literary industry, has had to have its only and most anticipated literary awards, the TELL YOUR OWN STORY National Book Awards, feel the grips of the pandemic. But thankfully, last Saturday, the ceremony was finally held, after a shove from its originally set date of May 30th, moving to June 27th.
The Tell Your Own Story National Book Awards are Zambian Awards that recognise players in the Zambian literary scene. The Awards were founded from the UNZA Radio show “Tell Your Own Story” that covers Zambian literary activity in 2015. As an initiative of Concept Developers Initiatives through its partnership with Unza Radio, the awards were meant to facilitate the growth of the literary culture in Zambia, and have since then featured dozens of authors, publishers, book reviewers and also institutions promoting reading and writing culture in Zambia.
In 2018 writers like Ingrid Nayame, Joe Sakala and David Kashiki were crowned the best in Zambia. In 2019, Freeman Mwenge, Mweo Kondolo and other writers won in a raft of categories.
In its third edition the Tell Your Own Story National Book Awards had 54 shortlisted nominees announced on 3 May, in 11 categories (some entries later pulled out of the competition). the following winners.
